Regional Autonomy a clue to Kashmir imbroglio
Farooq Abdullah's reported offer to make deputy chief minister from Jammu, if his party comes to power in the next election, will not be enough to satisfy regional aspirations and remove regional tensions that have plagued the politics of he state for the last sixty years and were root cause of many complications therein"observed Balraj Puri, founder o the regional autonomy movement in the state. He reminded the patron of the National Conference that Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah had announced on July 24, 1952, at a joint press conference that the constitution of the state would provide for regional autonomy.
This was also the main feature of the five tier internal constitutional set up unanimously adopted by the J&K State Peoples Convention, attended by all parties of the Kashmir valley, convened by Sheikh Abdullah in 1968, he said.
The stand was reiterated by the Sheikh, Puri added, before and after returning to power in 1975. According to him the National Conference, if elected, will have the unique opportunity to redeem the solemn and repeated commitments of its founder and contribute to strengthening the integrity of the state, he said.
